Sand contractors meeting today

November 23, 2010 05:17 pm | Updated 05:17 pm IST - MANGALORE:

An association representing sand contractors and sand miners has said that it will meet on Tuesday to organise an agitation on December 14 in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office if its demands are not met on the proposed State policy on sand mining, said

B.S. Chandru, adviser to the Joint Action Committee of sand contractors, sand boat owners, workers and building material transporters, told presspersons here on Monday that sand mining in the coastal districts should be excluded from the purview of the State policy.

Representatives of the sand miners and contractors said mining was different in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts.

Livelihood to be hit

If implemented, the policy would affect the livelihood of 10,000 people who worked in sand quarries, he said.

Ports and Fisheries and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar had recently said that a proposal on sand mining policy would soon be placed before the Cabinet.
