Development works are being taken up in 11 naxal-affected areas in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada at a cost of Rs. 5 crore, said Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal.
Mr. Goyal told presspersons here on Monday that the development works in the Belthangady taluk were among those taken up by the Government in eight naxal-hit taluks in the State.
He said 16 works were being taken up in the taluk. Eight works estimated at Rs. 2.5 crore had commenced.
A separate meeting would be held shortly regarding eight remaining works, he said. Mr. Goyal was among the officials who took part in a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda on Monday.
Mr. Goyal said the Government had been taking up construction of an anganwadi and laying a road in Naravi village. Five roads were laid at Yelneer village.
Work for construction of a bridge would be taken up at Shidilalu village and drains were being built in Aladangadi and Mittabagilu villages.
A 5 kV electricity generation plant had come up in Indabettu gram panchayat.
He said the role of police in this exercise was to certify that the areas where the development works were planned were naxal affected areas.
The police were involved helping the district administration in identification of beneficiaries for various welfare schemes being implemented in the naxal-affected areas, he said.
Mr. Goyal said with ceasefire on combing operations, it provided a good opportunity for naxalites to surrender taking advantage of rehabilitation package recently announced by the State Government.
