Five persons, including three of a family, were killed in two separate accidents in Mangalore on Monday. Two sisters, aged 9 and 11, and their 24-year-old uncle were killed in a road accident near National Institute of Technology-Karnataka in Surathkal on Monday.
The police said Sunil was taking his sister Savita and her two children Nishmita (11) and Manisha (9) in an autorickshaw to another sister’s house in Padre. They were all going to attend a ritual held as a part of the annual festival of a local deity.
The police said Sunil took a right turn towards Padre from the national highway and was hit by a lorry coming towards Mangalore. Sunil, Nishmita and Manisha were killed on the spot.
The lorry driver escaped from the spot, the police said. The traffic on the busy highway came to a halt for nearly an hour following the accident.
The police said Savita had come down from Mumbai with her two children for vacation two weeks ago. They were all staying with Savita’s mother in Ulaibettu.
Local MLA Mohiuddin Bava reached the spot and later visited Savita at a hospital. Mr. Bava said Savita’s husband Srinath is a businessman in Mumbai. Arrangements were also made to get blood for Savita who was still in a state of shock.
Hit-and-runTwo youths were killed after an unidentified truck allegedly rammed into their moped on National Highway 75 (Bangalore to Mangalore) near Uppinangadi on Monday.
Around 3 p.m., Suhail (21) and Mohammad Altaf (19), both residents of Bajatoor in Puttur taluk and working in a shop at Bangalore, were headed for Uppinangadi when a truck hit them on the Kootelu bridge on the highway, said Puttur Traffic Police.
Both died while being taken to hospital. The police said the truck sped away from the scene, and eye-witnesses could not note the registration number.
