Members of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat at a monthly meeting of the council alleged that urban government schools have more teachers than rural government schools.
Raising the subject Mamatha Gatti, a member and a former president of the panchayat, alleged that there was an imbalance in the student-teacher ratio in the district. Government schools in the city and outskirts have more teachers than in rural areas.
With regard to a higher primary school in Balmatta, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction Walter D’Mello said that it had four teachers for 32 students. As per the government norms, higher primary schools should have a minimum of four teacher, he said.
The DDPI said that the redeployment of teachers was under progress and any imbalance would be rectified before the start of the academic year 2015-16.
While discussing the construction of houses for the poor under the Basava Vasathi Yojane, the president of the panchayat was at the receiving end as a majority of the members said that applications of 242 beneficiaries have been rejected in the district.
