Many parts of Dakshina Kannada have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall since Saturday. Heavy rains accompanied with gusty winds lashed the city and other parts of the district on Sunday. There was less traffic on roads as many people preferred to remain indoors due to rain, although it was a Sunday.
The Coast Guard personnel rescued three fishermen, who were in distress, from a fishing boat off Panambur beach on Sunday afternoon.
A portion of the compound wall around the University College at Hampankatta collapsed at about 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Water logging on roadside in some areas where roads are being concreted created problems for pedestrians. At Rao and Rao Circle there was ankle-deep water on roadside as it was not draining out properly. An autorickshaw driver, Krishna, said the problem arose after the road was concreted, without providing proper drainage facility. Stormwater accumulated on either side of several stretches of concrete roads being laid between Mangaladevi Temple and A.B. Shetty Circle. Some residents of Pandeshwar said that a stretch near Pandeshwar level-crossing had been left without concreting.
This muddy stretch had become slippery due to rains, posing danger to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders.
Some median stretches on Marnamikatta-Valencia-Kankanady Road too were covered with slush, posing danger to vehicle-users.
Rainfall
Bajpe Airport recorded 65.5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours that ended at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Sullia recorded 62.2 mm rainfall, Mangalore 64.6 mm, Bantwal 57.8 mm, Puttur 43 mm, Belthangady 25.8 mm, and Uppinangady 22 mm. No major rain-related damage was reported from the district.
An airport official said that a Jet Airways flight from Mumbai was diverted to Bangalore due to inclement weather in the morning. Another Indian Airlines flight from Mumbai was diverted to Bangalore in the morning. The same flight later reached Mangalore Airport from Bangalore at 3.30 p.m.
