While some students are privileged and have easy access to computers, there are others who are full of aspirations but are using computers for the first time.
Some students, who had finished their Pre-University Courses, in rural areas around Polali, were learning the basics of computers at a centre in Polali. Some of them are using a computer for the first time. Most of them said they were hoping to get a job once they learnt how to use the computer.
Vijetha, instructor, told The Hindu , that some students were seeing computers for the first time and they became nervous. She makes them feel re-assured so that they became comfortable with using the computer.
She said the students start with typing (learning ‘asdfghj' on an online keyboard). Then they learn how to use other basic software. They could take up courses that were of four months (for Rs.350) or for seven months and learn computer application. The centre has trained 25 to 30 students till now. The students are from Polali, Kairangala, Kolethamajal, Gurupur, Addoor, Amunje, and Badakabail.
The centre, located at Ramakrishna Tapovana, Polali, has eight computers donated by Karnataka Bank.
Last week, there were six students working on the computers. Some of the computers had ‘Baraha' in them and the students could be seen practising typing Kannada alphabet.
Kushalakshi, who has done her PU, was using a computer for the first time last week. She had been given online typing to practise. She said there was some fear in her mind as she did not know how to use it and was trying to learn about it.
M. Unnisa, Ashmitha from Ammunje, Durgavathi from Benjanapadavu Government College, said they would get a job if they knew how to work on a computer. Swathi from Bajpe said she came to the centre as it was close to her PU college. Iram from Karkala, who has finished his PUC, had come to visit his relatives. When he saw the opportunity to learn computers, he went ahead to take the classes as it would help him get a job, he said.
