B. Janardhan Poojary, Congress leader and former Union Minister, said on Tuesday that the State government should give up its reported move to bring the maths under governmental control. Small Scale Industries and Muzrai Minister Prakash Hukkeri had recently said that the State government was thinking of bringing in a legislation to bring the maths under its control due to the reported irregularities which had taken place in a math.

Mr. Hukkeri had also said that the move was being taken on the directions of the court.

Mr. Poojary said that there were enough provisions under the Indian Penal Code to take action against any math where such irregularities took place. “The government should not bring the maths under its control. It should not interfere in the functioning of the maths. The government should challenge the directions of the High Court in the Supreme Court on this issue,” he said.

He said that many Hindu maths were rendering valuable service to the society.
