Nearly five policemen, including an Assistant Commissioner, were injured after being reportedly attacked when they came to take away two inmates from a Mangalore District Prison.

Prison Superintendent P.S. Ramesh said inmates Faizal and Talat were to be shifted to a prison in Dharwad under police escort on Sunday morning.

When the police personnel arrived, the two refused to come out. They were supported by around 20 other inmates. Mr. Ramesh sought the help of City Police Commissioner R. Hithendra and around 40 police personnel. When the police asked them to come out they refused and reportedly threw chilli powder and other objects, including a television set and its set-top box.

“I do not know what flew towards me,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central) K. Tilakchandra, who received injuries on the right eye brow and the right hand. Police Inspectors Raghav Padil, Ramachandra Maladevaru, Mohammed Sharief and seven constables sustained minor injuries. Three inmates – Sahil, Samir and Shamsuddin – were also injured.
