Ornaments, silver articles stolen from jewellery shop

Thieves entered a jewellery shop by breaking open the exit fan in Attavar and took away gold ornaments and silver articles in all worth Rs. 2.2 lakh on Sunday.

The Mangaluru South police said the shop had been closed on Saturday. On Sunday, the jewellery shop owner returned to the shop and found ornaments and silver articles missing. Thieves had taken them away from the showcase and wooden cupboard, the police said.

Man dies in accident

A man lost his life when the van he was driving plunged into a rivulet near the vented dam cum bridge at Mattu village in Kaup police station limits on Sunday night.

According to the police, Shashidhar Shetty was driving the Maruti Omni van from Katapady village to Mattu, when he lost control over the vehicle on the dam-cum-bridge at around 10.15 p.m. on Sunday. The vehicle plunged into the river. His brother-in-law Prashanth Sriyan managed to open the window and swam to the river bank.

He then informed local people, who helped get the car to the river bank. But Shashidhar Shetty, who was in the driver’s seat, was dead. A case had been registered at Kaup police station and investigations are on, the police said.

Theft in temple

A sum of Rs. 20,000 was taken away from the hundi of Shankapala Subramanya Temple in Guthigaru village in Sullia taluk on Sunday. The Subramanaya Police said thieves had gained entry into the temple by removing few tiles on the roof in the early hours of Sunday.

Man drowns

A man drowned in Pancha Gangavalli river at Gangolli village near Kundapur on Sunday. His body was recovered on Monday. According to the police, Yogendra Devadiga (33), a resident of Gangolli, had gone to the Pancha Gangavali river to fish on July 19. A case has been registered.

Body traced

The body of the fisherman Shivananda Kotian, who was missing since July 18, was traced at Kaipunjal in Uliyargoli village near Kaup on Monday. According to the police, Kotian had gone out for fishing in a traditional boat with eight other fishermen from Malpe Padukere village on July 18.
