“Government officials should be more responsive to the needs of all people, especially the poor people,” said Swami Veereshananda Saraswati, president of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Ashram, Tumkur, here on Monday.
He was delivering a lecture on “Professional ethics in administrative sector” to mark the first anniversary of the inauguration of the District Offices Complex, which houses most government departments here. The swamiji said that government officials should love their work instead of mechanically discharging their duties.
It was only when they loved their work, they would feel more responsible. Conversely, if they were doing their job because they felt it was thrust upon them, then they would not put their heart and soul into it. Officers should keep away from corruption.
It was better to accept defeat following the right path, rather than to adopt wrong means and reign victorious.
They should keep away from ego hassles and be more oriented towards solving the problems of people, he said.
He said that the officials should be realistic and creative in their work.
They should develop the ability to resist any pressure that might be exerted on them. Officers should be ready to learn from anyone, no matter who it was.
They should realise that society could not be changed by mere laws and rules, but by love and compassion, he said.
Ashok Kamath, Education Officer, welcomed the gathering. Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, delivered the introductory remarks.
M.T. Reju, Deputy Commissioner, and S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, CEO of zilla panchayat, were present.
