Kavya Poojary, a class 10 student of Alva’s School in Moodbidri, reportedly committed suicide.

Objecting to media trial in the death of a high school girl in a hostel room in Moodbidri recently, president of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Sunday that it is not correct on the part of the media to target the education institution based on the incident.

Speaking to media persons in Udupi, the former Chief Minister said that media pronouncing verdict on the incident is not a good development.

He was referring to the alleged suicide of Kavya Poojary, a class 10 student of Alva’s High School in Moodbidri, in the hostel room in Moodbidri on July 20. She was also a badminton player. The police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the death was being discussed in the media, especially on television channels, which is targeting the education institution by projecting it as the accused. It is not easy to build an institution. Media should not try to tarnish the image of an institution in which thousands of students studied. All politics on the incident should be stopped.

The government should intervene in the matter to ensure that the truth came out through proper investigation. Thus, it should put an end to all rumours, he said.

Meanwhile, district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai and Ivan D’Souza, MLC, visited the family of the deceased in their house in Kateel on Sunday. Some leaders of the Sangh Parivar had visited her house there on Saturday.
