NHAI told to speed up work

April 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - MANGALURU:

Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader has directed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials to expedite road works under progress at the Thokkottu bridge that has been causing hindrance to traffic movement.

In a meeting held at the office of Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday, Mr. Khader also asked the NHAI officials to finish the work related to service roads at the Thokkottu junction by next week.

Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo asked NHAI officials to expedite works related to widening of roads leading to Nantoor Junction.

Mr. Khader has expressed his displeasure over the recommendation of Dilip Gandhi, the head of Parliamentary panel on subordinate legislation examining the provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, that the committee would examine the health effects of tobacco.

In a letter to Prime Minister, Mr. Khader said such a recommendation showed ignorance of senior MPs like Mr. Gandhi to health hazards of tobacco that was well documented. Such recommendations were only to favour the tobacco industry, he said.
