Construction of fully furnished quarters for the Principal District and Sessions Judge and judges of 28 courts in Mangalore began on Saturday. While the Principal District and Sessions Judge’s quarters will be built at a cost of Rs. 1.35 crore, 28 flats in two separate apartment blocks will be built at cost of Rs. 18.2 crore. These three buildings will come up in Hat Hill area off M.G. Road.

High Court Judge K. Bhakatavatsala, who is also the administrative judge for Dakshina Kannada, laid the foundation stone for construction of the new quarters. District In-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai and Mangalore South MLA J.R. Lobo took part.

The new quarters of the Principal District Judge will be replacing the old quarters, which are in a dilapidated condition, having been constructed in 1953-54. Tenders have been issued to a construction firm which has promised to complete construction in a span of 11 months, said Public Works Department’s Executive Engineer Gopal Nayak.

More judicial officers’ quarters are scheduled to come up in the district – at Belthangady, Moodbidri, Puttur and Bantwal.
