Minister of State for Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries K. Abhayachandra Jain said here on Thursday that a new indoor stadium will be constructed in the city during 2015-16.
At a meeting to review the programmes of Department of Youth Services and Sports he said that the stadium would be built in Urwa. It would be the second indoor stadium in the city.
The minister said that a swimming pool of international standards would be constructed at Emmekere near Pandeshwar on two acres during 2014-15.
National level kabaddi player Uday Chowta said that there was an immediate need to have an indoor stadium with synthetic ground in the city as many regional and national level kabaddi tournaments were now being organised in synthetic turf. As Dakshina Kannada has produced many kabaddi players and they dominated in the State level, players would have to compete with those who have been trained in synthetic turf.
He suggested that the synthetic ground for kabaddi could also be provided in the indoor stadium.
Deputy Director of Department of Youth Services and Sports, Dakshina Kannada P. Parshwanath said that a lawn would be laid in the middle of Mangala stadium where synthetic track has been laid. In addition works on laying interlocks at the entrance to the stadium and painting the viewers’ gallery were pending.
Sports hostel
He said that the government has permitted the department to start eighth standard in the district sports hostel in the Mangala stadium complex from the academic year 2014-15.
Mr. Parshwanath said that civil works on laying a 400 mts synthetic athletic track at Swarj Maidan in Moodbidri has been completed.
