On the basis of a “suspiciously clean” T-shirt, Puttur Town police claimed to have cracked a six-month-old murder case by arresting two youth on Wednesday.
According to the police, Nizamuddin (20), a salesman at a knick-knack shop, and Kalandar Shafi (23) have been remanded in 15 day judicial custody after they reportedly confessed to killing a beggar near Aryapatta on February 10.
When the beggar’s body was found, the police had filed a case of a suspicious death. However, post-mortem report revealed wounds to the head and multiple-bruises on the body. “With wounds like that, we would have expected that the clothes would have had drops of blood. But the T-shirt and lungi he was wearing was spotless,” said B.K. Manjaiah, Puttur Town Police Inspector. On questioning those in the area, the police tracked the T-shirt to Nizamuddin. “He told us that the beggar had insisted on sitting in front of their house even though he and his friends repeatedly asked him to go away. When he persisted, the men assaulted him and he fell into a ditch. Panicked by his death, they removed his blood-stained clothes and draped in fresh ones to avoid suspicion,” said the police inspector.
