B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda, who took charge as the Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada on Monday, said the police would continue to take action against those who use social media to create unrest in society and disturb communal harmony in the district.
“The Social Media Monitoring Cell of the district police will continuously monitor Facebook and WhatsApp communications,” he told reporters, adding that they would allow healthy debate on social media but would not tolerate misuse of these platforms.
Mr. Gowda said the police would respect those abiding by the law and take strict action against those involved in anything illegal, including extraction of sand.
This is his first posting to the coastal region, and Mr. Gowda said he was glad to come to a region known for high literacy rate and cultural heritage. He said he would work towards ensuring peace and order in the district. While continuing with the good work done by his predecessors, Mr. Gowda said, he would also implement some of the best practices he adopted in Belagavi.
He said he would also consider creation of front offices at police stations where visitors can get water and newspaper while waiting for police officers. Mr. Gowda said he would have parade commands in Kannada, which he successfully implemented for an year in Belagavi. A committee headed by the Additional Director-General of Police (Administration) was going through his Kannada translation of parade commands in English.
