Many houses collapsed in heavy overnight rain in some places in the district, even as low-lying areas were under knee-deep water on Tuesday.
Mangalore recorded 96.2 mm of rainfall in 24 hours till 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Bantwal recorded 96 mm, Puttur 70.8 mm, Belthangady 69.1 mm, and Sullia 64.2 mm.
According to the district authorities, a farmer's house collapsed in the Ekkaru Gudde area near Bajpe on Monday night, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs. 1 lakh. An abandoned house in a heavily populated area in Attavara collapsed around 7.30 a.m. on Tuesday, leading to panic in the neighbourhood, with several people running out of their houses fearing that their dwellings too might collapse.
A house belonging to a landless farmer, identified as Raju Ajilaya, collapsed in Mukkuvey village in Puttur, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs. 25,000 and another house collapsed in Kodimbadi village in Puttur, resulting in estimated loss of Rs. 10,000, according to taluk officials.
Flooding
The areas that were flooded in the city are Jeppinamagaru, Kodialbailu, Hosabettu, Snehanagar, Kottara Chowki, Kadri, Urwastore and Kodical.
There was a traffic jam at Kannur on National Highway 48 in the evening as the edges of a culvert caved in at two places.
