Mangalore City Corporation said on Tuesday that residents can SMS their complaints to 81236 66266 if solid waste is not picked from their doorsteps.
Manjunath R. Shetty, Environment Engineer at the corporation, said the number was dedicated to receive complaints pertaining to solid waste collection and not for any other issues related to the corporation. People should specify the ward number and area in complaints.
Mr. Shetty said that the solid waste collection had been entrusted to eight contractors in eight packages. As per the terms of the contract it was mandatory on their part to collect waste from doorsteps.
An MCC handout said the contractor could collect a monthly user fee of Rs. 30 for collecting waste from residential houses. The monthly user fee for commercial establishments ranged between Rs. 100 and Rs. 1,000. For hotels and marriage halls, it was between Rs. 300 and Rs. 1,000, and for traders in vegetables markets it ranged from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500. Under Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, penalty ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 could be levied on those throwing garbage on roads.
