Karuna Kirana Trust and G.T. Foundation on Monday came forward to help patients in need of care at the Government Lady Goschen Hospital.
Around 7,000 babies are delivered at the hospital every year where women from Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, and parts of Kerala come seeking medical assistance. Complications such as loss of blood occur during pregnancy and require care. “Patients find it difficult to meet the expenses for procuring blood and medicines necessary for treatment,” said B.V. Kakkilaya, a doctor and an advisor of the trust.
The trust and the foundation will bear the expenses. “We will provide a minimum of Rs. 25,000 every month. We will also bear additional costs,” said V. Ravichandran, managing trustee of the G.T. Foundation. “This is our first initiative in the field of health care,” Mr. Ravichandran said. Doctors Priya Ballal and Deepak Shedde would oversee the use of funds, he said.
At a function held earlier, where money was handed over to the patients, Dr. Kakkilaya said it was painful to see the plight of patients at hospitals. There was a need for more funds to take care of patients as the cost of treatment would only get higher as the government was slowly devolving itself from providing health-care facilities.
