A large number of Muslims gathered at masjids and idgah grounds early on Sunday to observe Bakrid, the festival of sacrifice.

In Mangalore, the largest gathering was at the Idgah Masjid on Lighthouse Hill Road.

Among those offering prayers were U.T. Khader, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, and A.B. Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada; while B. Ramanath Rai, Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment, and Mangalore MLA J.R. Lobo arrived to greet the devotees.

Willingness to sacrifice

At the Masjid, Mangalore Khazi Twaka Ahmed Musliyar, urged the Muslims to uphold the message of the Koran by upholding the values of brotherhood and staying away from wrong-doing.

The day, which marks the willingness to sacrifice for God, saw devotees wishing each other after prayers, followed by a day of visiting the houses of relatives.

Special prayers were observed in numerous masjids, and also the Sayyid Madani Dargah in Ullal.
