Janata Dal (Secular) workers staged a protest in front of the Mangalore City Corporation office in Lalbagh on Wednesday seeking action against an assistant town planning officer (ATPO) who, they alleged, abused the party councillor Abul Aziz on Tuesday.

They submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of the corporation, Ajith Kumar Hegde.

General secretary of the party's district unit, A.Vasantha Poojary, alleged that Mr. Aziz was going to the chamber of the Commissioner on Wednesday to discuss an issue pertaining to the Port ward.

Then the ATPO and other officials prevented the councillor and abused him in filthy language.

A group led by Mr. Aziz and a group of officials shouted slogans against each other in front of the Commissioner’s chamber on Tuesday evening after heated arguments with each other.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner on Wednesday filed a complaint with Pandeshwar and Barke police.

It said that a group of people led by Mr. Aziz obstructed a team of officials of the corporation led by the town planning officer from performing their duties at Kandak in port ward from 10.45 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

It alleged that the group used filthy language against the officials, threatened with dire consequences and cordoned off their vehicle and did not allow them to move.

The officials had gone there to verify a complaint that an ice plant was coming up there illegally.

Mr. Hegde told The Hindu that the owners of ice plant being built had obtained license from all government departments concerned.
