‘Guidelines on quota for women in ULBs to be framed soon’

June 09, 2013 12:44 pm | Updated 12:44 pm IST - Udupi:

Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake on Saturday said that the State government was framing guidelines to implement the laws which guaranteed 50 per cent reservation for women in urban local bodies (ULBs).

He was speaking at the felicitation function organised by the District Mahila Congress for women representatives of the party who triumphed in the recent ULB polls.

He said the Congress was committed to the empowerment of women. This was evident by the fact that the Congress party had chosen Pratibha Patil to be the first woman President of the country and Meera Kumar to be the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha. The Mahila Congress had played a vital role in the victory of the Congress party in the by-elections to the Udupi-Chikmagalur parliamentary seat in 2012 and in the recent Assembly elections, he said.

Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, regretted that women did not have any reservation in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. But the Congress party was committed to providing 50 per cent reservation to women in both Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.

Veronic Carnelio, President of District Mahila Congress, welcomed the gathering
