The 40th series of State-level seminar and exhibition of Student Project Programme (SPP) organised by the NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT) in association with Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) was inaugurated at Nitte in Udupi district on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the NMAMIT, Karanam Uma Maheshwar Rao, Director of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, who inaugurated the seminar, said that all educational institutions should give priority to research and innovation.
S. Subramanian, Secretary of KSCST and Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, said that the 2010-2020 decade can be called as the ‘Decade of Innovation’. According to a survey about global innovation in different countries across the world, India was ranked in the 60th place, he said. Anil Uppin, Managing Director of Karnataka Council for Technological Upgradation, Department of Industry and Commerce, spoke about the special support given to the women entrepreneurs by the government departments in setting up new ventures. He focused on the subsidy component which is given by the government to promote technology into the field of industry and agriculture.
Presiding over the function, N. Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte University, expressed his concern about the students who were academically strong and technically weak. “Compulsory projects during a course should not be done only to obtain a degree. Students should work on their basic presentation and technical skills which will help in their overall development,” he said.
Over 500 engineering students exhibited about 200 projects. Nearly 125 faculties from across the State participated in the event.
