Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo on Saturday said the 2-km stretch of road between Fr. Muller Hospital and Jeppu Nandigudda would be made a four-lane and developed as a model road soon.

Speaking at a consultation meeting at Jeppu here, Mr. Lobo said that grants for widening the existing concrete road are available.

Care would be taken to minimise cutting of avenue trees abutting the existing road, the MLA said.

He said before venturing into the widening process, local residents would be taken in to confidence.

Recently concreted

The stretch had recently been concreted with provision for a median.

However, vehicular movement on the stretch has increased as the road a connects important locations of south Mangaluru, including the Mangaladevi Temple.

It is also an alternative route to the central parts of the city via Pandeshwar. However, huge avenue trees abutting the road have come in the way of further widening the stretch.

It also houses several important institutions, including Fr. Muller Hospital, Roshani Nilaya School of Social Work, St. Gerosa School etc.

Foundation stone

Earlier, Mr. Lobo laid the foundation stone for concreting a 400-m stretch of Sharabathkatte Road in Nantoor.

The road had been in a dilapidated condition for several years and residents as well as other road users had been put to great hardship travelling on it.

Short-cut

The road also acts as a short-cut between Airport Road and National Highway 66 near Padua High School. As a result, hundreds of vehicles plying to and from the Airport make use of this road regularly.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lobo said all important roads in Mangaluru city would be made concrete on priority basis.

Mayor Jacinta Vijay Alfred, Chairman of Standing Committee on Town Planning and Improvement Deepak Poojary, the former Mayor Shashidhar Hegde and others were present.
