The police have arrested a 30-year-old relative on the charge of murdering the wife of a fisherman at Marvanthe on September 20 at Gangolli in Udupi. According to a press release issued by the district police, the body of Mangala Kharvi (36) was found on the beach near a hotel in Marvanthe village. The post-mortem revealed that she was strangled to death.

The police suspect it to be a case of an extramarital affair gone wrong.

The police said Mangala was married for 12 years to Raja Kharvi, a fisherman, but was having an affair with Satish Kharvi (30), also a fisherman. About five months ago, Satish got engaged, after which Mangala allegedly threatened to reveal their relationship to the family members. On September 20, they went to Marvanthe beach, where a quarrel broke out between them. The police said, in a fit of fury, Satish strangled Mangala with her sari.

Satish was produced before a court in Kundapur, which remanded him to judicial custody till November 30, the release said.
