A man, accused of killing his children and his in-laws in June 2010, was awarded the death sentence by the fifth additional sessions court in Puttur on Tuesday.

The “rarest of the rare” pronouncement to Ramesh Naik is in addition to the life imprisonment awarded to him by a Tumkur court last year for killing his mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

On June 16, Mr. Naik, who was then the manager of a bank in Sholapur in Maharashtra, came to the city where his wife, also a banker, stayed. While she was at work, he took their two children – Bhuvan (8) and Krithika (4) – in a taxi to Panaje in Puttur and drowned them in a lake, the prosecution said.

Two days earlier, on June 14, 2010, he strangled his mother-in-law Saraswati and sister-in-law Savita (35) in their house in Tumkur after an argument over Savita’s affair with a man of another caste. He confessed to an affair with his sister-in-law.
