Degree college teachers of Mangalore University will stage a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Friday to protest against a recent circular of the government enhancing teaching hours.

Association of Mangalore University College Teachers president Norbert Lobo and its general secretary Laxminarayana Bhat said in a release that more than 1,000 teachers would take out in a procession from the University College, Hampankatta, to the Deputy Commissioner’s office at 2 p.m. and stage the dharna. They said that according to the circular of the Department of Collegiate Education on November 10, 2014, teachers in government, government aided private and private colleges should teach 22 hours a week with immediate effect. Earlier, it was 16 hours. According to the circular, for those teachers having practical classes, it would become 26 hours of teaching a week. Meanwhile, Mangalore University Aided and Private College Principals’ Association has opposed the decision and urged the department to withdraw the circular.
