The police have sought an explanation from the organiser of the Baraadi Beedu Kambala and the owners of buffaloes which participated in the Kambala, which took place near Karkala on December 20.

Based on complaints from the Animal Welfare Board of India alleging cruelty to the buffaloes at the Kambala, the police registered one cognisable case and 21 non-cognisable cases at the Karkala Rural Police Station.

But Kambala organiser Jeevandhar Ballal had refuted the allegations of the Animal Welfare Board and said all the directions of the High Court had been adhered to.

K. Annamalai, Assistant Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu on Monday that the police had informed Kambala committee president Bhaskar Kotian to identify the owners of the buffalo bulls with the regard to the non-cognisable cases.

These owners were expected to report at the police station in a couple of days.

Over the cognisable case, the police have asked Mr. Ballal and the owner of the buffalo, whose leg was twisted, to come to the police station along with the requisite certificates from the veterinary officer.

They were expected on Tuesday. “We will then investigate the matter,” he said.

As many as 125 pairs of buffaloes participated in the Baraadi Beedu Kambala.

The complaints were registered based on complaints given by Sunil Havildar, Field Officer, from the Chennai office of Animal Welfare Board of India, Mr. Annamalai said.
