Elderly woman robbed of ornaments

A 70-year-old woman, who was staying alone in a house in Padil, was robbed of her gold ornaments and cash in the early hours of Monday.

The Mangaluru Rural Police said that Neena Jayapal was staying alone in her house in Darbar Hill, off Padil Main Road. Around midnight just as Ms. Jayapal had retired to bed, a thief broke open the balcony door, entered the house and reportedly smothered Ms. Jayapal with a cloth. The attack rendered her unconscious.

The police say that the thief made away with 12 gold bangles, three gold chains, four gold rings, some expensive watches and Rs. 30,000 in cash.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjeev M. Patil said that they were investigating the role of a gang from Kerala in the theft.

A search is on to find the accused.

A 19-year-old motorcyclist died after he was run over by a private city bus near Shivarama Karanath Pilikula Nisargadhama on Sunday. The Mangaluru Rural police said the bus hit the motorcycle head-on near the Pilikula bus stop.

The deceased, identified as Ajit, from Saripalla, fell of his vehicle and came under the wheels of the bus. He died on the spot.

The bus driver Ramanna was arrested.
