Elderly woman murdered in Kulai on Saturday

A 64-year-old woman was murdered in her house in Kulai Hosabettu on Saturday night and gold jewellery worth Rs. 3 lakh were taken away, said Surathkal police.

Police said Sumati Prabhu, who lost her husband two years ago, was living alone in a house in Hosabettu.

Her daughter, who was married a few years ago, and two sons were living separately.

On Saturday night, when Ms. Prabhu’s tenant came to her house to pay the rent, there was no response.

The tenant then saw that another door, 25 metres away from the front door, was open. When he went inside he found Ms. Prabhu dead on the floor. He called her son, Gurudas Prabhu, who then informed police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Panambur, Ravi Kumar said the murderers had slit Ms. Prabhu’s throat and made away with 192 grams of gold jewellery.

Mr. Kumar said the murder was for gain. Police are not sure whether the murderers were strangers or known to the victim, Mr. Kumar said.

Man found dead in well

A 49-year-old man was found dead in a well near his house near KSRTC depot in Kuntikana on Sunday morning. The Urwa police said Cyril Antony (49) was missing from the house since Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning a relative of his saw a body in the well near the house.

The police took the help of Fire and Emergency Services personnel to remove the body.

The police found glass pieces on his body along with his severed penis.

On autopsy, doctors at the Wenlock Hospital, said that injuries looked self-inflicted. The police have registered the case as suicide. Police said Mr. Antony was working as a security guard in a private security agency.

He was mentally disturbed for the last few weeks, the police said.

Pedestrian fatally knocked down

A 63-year-old pilgrim was knocked down by a speeding off-road vehicle at Kukke Subramanya Saturday night. Around 8.30 p.m., Gangadhar Shetty from Hassan was walking close to the temple with his daughter-in-law Chaitra when the vehicle struck him, said Subramanya police. While he died in a private hospital in Mangalore a few hours later, Ms. Chaitra was admitted into the hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the vehicle was trying to avoid a motorcycle that was coming in the wrong direction on the narrow road when it hit the two.

KSRTC bus stoned

One person was injured after a stone was thrown at a Davangere-bound KSRTC bus at Bantwal bypass road on Sunday. Thimmaiah, a passenger on the bus, suffered minor. This is the second such instance over the weekend, after a stone was thrown at a Tirupati-bound KSRTC bus near Pannemangalore on Saturday afternoon.

Auto overturns

Six II PUC students from Alva’s College were injured when the autorickshaw they were travelling overturned at Gandhi Nagar on Sunday. The Moodbidri police said Manu Kumar, Akshay Kumar, Varun, Rajesh, Nikhil, Kartik and Srihari were going from the college’s hostel in Vidyagiri to Moodbidri Market to make some weekly purchases. The driver of the autorickshaw lost control over the vehicle and it overturned. Five students were admitted to Alva’s Hospital while one was brought to a private hospital in Kuntikana in Mangalore, the police said.

Driver convicted

The Third Judicial Magistrate First Class Court on Thursday sentenced a driver of a jeep to six months of imprisonment on finding him guilty of killing a 55-year-old man and causing grievous injury to a 15-year-old boy.

According to Mangalore Rural police, the driver Lanston D’Souza and private bus driver Thomas D’Souza were competing with each other to overtake the other on the Shaktinagar road on November 6, 2011. At one point the jeep went and hit Sanjeev Shetty (55), who died on the spot, while Yatish (15) was seriously injured. Both were pedestrians.

The bus rammed into the compound wall of Rama Shakti Mission.

The JMFC Magistrate Undi Manjula Shivappa sentenced Lanston to six years of imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs. 2,500. Thomas was asked to pay penalty of Rs.1000 for reckless driving. Assistant Public Prosecutor B. Mohan Kumar examined the witnesses.

llicit liquor

The JMFC Magistrate sentenced Herald Vegas (55), Supriyan (50) and Mark D’Souza to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs. 10,000 on them.

All three of them were found guilty of possession and sale of illicit liquor in Ullal on November 19, 2007. All the three were convicted for violating Section 32 and 34 of the Karnataka Excise Act.
