Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here recently urging the government to strengthen services and infrastructure at government hospitals.
They also urged the government to open a medical college in Dakshina Kannada.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, B.K. Imtiyaz, president, district unit, DYFI, said as private medical colleges charged hefty feed many poor students have been forced to give up on their dreams of becoming doctors. Hence, the government should open its own medical college.
Mr. Imtiyaz alleged that private hospitals charge patients hefty fees and the government has lost control over them. The hospitals have been fleecing patients, he alleged.
Sunil Kumar Bajal, secretary, Mangaluru City South Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxists), criticised the government for delay in completing the new building of Government Lady Goschen Hospital building in the city.
