The body of a baby girl was found in a parcel given to a driver of a private bus at Bajagoli village in Karkala taluk of Udupi district on October 4.

The Karkala Rural Police said on Friday that Bhujanga Hegde, a resident of Mala village, was working as a driver of a private bus.

He was given a parcel by a driver of a KSRTC bus operating from Hosadurga to Dharmasthala at Bajagoli around 6.15 p.m. on October 4. He had got acquainted with the KSRTC bus driver only a week ago.

The KSRTC bus driver had told Mr. Hegde that some passenger had left a parcel in his bus and that it might be containing chicken. Mr. Hegde sent the parcel to his house.

His family members, who opened the parcel, were shocked to see the body of a baby girl in it and informed Mr. Hegde about it.

Mr. Hegde informed the Karkala Rural Police. The police said that someone who wanted to conceal the death of the new born child must have packed it in a parcel and secretly kept it in the bus.

A case had been registered and investigations were on. The name of the KSRTC bus driver or conductor was not known yet, the police said.

Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah told The Hindu on Friday that according to the preliminary information, the KSRTC bus driver and conductor had noticed the parcel when the bus was in Sringeri.

Probe demanded

A delegation of the District Mahila Congress met Mr. Boralingaiah here on Friday and urged him to investigate the case immediately and thoroughly, and bring the guilty to the book.

In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Boralingaiah, the Mahila Congress demanded the immediate arrest and interrogation of the KSRTC bus driver.
