Districts in Mangalore to set up toilets on highways

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat is planning to build toilets at seven places on national highways and state highways in the district from Rs. 30 lakh the panchayat received in 2010 under the State-level sanitation award.

The places identified for building the toilets are Talapady, Beluvai, Kalladkka, Ajjavara and Shakthinagar (in Belthangady taluk) and Gundia and Nelyadi.

Stating this at the district-level water and sanitation committee meeting at the panchayat on Thursday, Manjula G., district co-ordinator, Nirmal Bharat Abhiyana (sanitation programme of the government), said the panchayat was yet to get land to build the toilets at Gundia and Nelyadi on Mangalore-Bangalore national highway. It has received possession of land in other places.

The panchayat has released Rs. 6 lakh to Goltamajalu gram panchayat in Bantwal taluk for the toilet at Kalladkka on the same highway at an estimated cost of Rs. 7.50 lakh. She said Rs. 4 lakh has been released to Talapady gram panchayat for the toilet at Talapady on Mangalore-Kasaragod national highway at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 lakh.

The official said Beluvai, on the national highway between Moodbidri and Karkala, has been given Rs. 2 lakh for the toilet at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.50 lakh.

Ms. Manjula said the toilet at Ajjavara (Sullia taluk) on Mani-Mysore state highway and at Shakthinagar on the state highway between Guruvayanakere and Venur would be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.50 lakh each. The panchayat has released Rs. 2 lakh each to Ajjavara and Kuvettu gram panchayats.

The balance amount would have to be borne by the respective gram panchayats, she said.
