The Ullal police have arrested five persons on the charge of criminal conspiracy to commit dacoity by waylaying vehicles.

The police identified the accused as Ravi Kumar, 24, a resident of Aryapu, Puttur; Khaleel alias Kallu, 27; K. Rajesh, 30; Azim alias Mohammed Azim and Jabir Abbas alias Jabir, all residents of Kunjathur village in Kerala.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the accused near Kallapu, off Thokkottu early on Sunday, while they were allegedly waiting to waylay passing cars and commit dacoity. Iron rods, swords, chilli powder, knives and a car were also seized from the accused, the police said. Among the accused, Rajesh, Javid and Khaleel were accused in an assault case in Manjeshwara police station limits of Kerala three days ago.

Ravi Kumar has four cases against him in Puttur, Manjeshwara and Barke Mangaluru, including a case of possessing ganja. The police claimed the accused were also attempting to transport ganja from Kerala to Mangaluru.

A jurisdictional magistrate remanded the accused to 15 days judicial custody, an official release here stated.

The operation was conducted by Ullal Inspector Gopikrishna, his team and personnel from the anti-rowdy squad, the release added.
