Customs seizes $55,000 from flyer at Mangalore International Airport

Customs officials at Mangalore International Airport have seized $55,000 (approximately, Rs. 34.29 lakh) from a passenger on Monday.

The foreign currency was found concealed in the luggage of Abdul Basheer Kandapuram Mohammad (30), a resident of Kudlu in Kasaragod district as he was leaving for Dubai. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence are probing his role as a “professional hawala carrier”.

He did not have any documents to prove the source of the foreign currency, said offials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

House gutted in fire

Goods estimated to be worth Rs. 2 lakh were gutted at a house near Salethur on Monday afternoon. Around 1 a.m., Rukhia, a home maker, who stepped out of the house after smelling a faint scent of gas returned to find that the gas cylinder had caught on fire and damaged the house, said Vittal police.

Gold stolen

Gold ornaments worth Rs. 80,000 were allegedly stolen from a house in Tenkarandur, Belthangady taluk late on Monday morning. The police are investigating the incident.
