Court comes to students' rescue

June 21, 2010 05:16 pm | Updated 05:16 pm IST - MANGALORE:

The Karnataka High Court has directed Mangalore University to award degrees to 13 postgraduate students of St. Aloysius College of the 2007-08 batch, provided they have successfully completed the course.

In April, the Syndicate of the university had decided not to award degrees to students on the grounds that the college, had not paid fees amounting to Rs. 39,11,680 to the university.

In an order on June 16, Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar ruled that students should not suffer because of the litigation between the college and the university. It directed the university to award degrees to eligible students within 15 days from the date of receipt of the order.

The court also said “while it is clear that there is some dispute” between the college and the university with regard to an overdue payment, the matter would be decided in this writ petition on merits at the time of final hearing.
