Compositions of Kanakadasa echoed in the Town Hall here on Thursday as undergraduate and pre-university course students rendered different kritis of the social reformer who is said to have lived in the 16th century.
This was part of the Kanaka Keerthana organised by the Centre for Research on Kanakadasa, Mangalore University.
Girls outnumbered boys and elevated the mood of the audience by singing popular as well as some rare ‘kritis'.
The rendition of Tande neene tayi neene…Eesha ninna… by a college girl moved the audience. This kriti of the saint composer is known for its richness and essence of his literature.
The contestants tried their luck with rare kritis like Tanna prabhiya phalava tanariyade anyarige aaduvudu avaguna marale … and karunakarane nyayavembu.Nammama sharade… , Tallanisadiru kandya… , Hari ninna charanava… , Mannali madida madake … and so on were the other popular numbers rendered on the occasion.
B. Shivarama Shetty, co-ordinator of the centre, told The Hindu that the song Nee mayeyolago nennolu mayeyo … represented the branch of epistemology in philosophy. In this composition, the dasa questions what was true (adequate) knowledge and false (inadequate) knowledge and what is the truth?
In all, 61 candidates, including four teachers, participated.
Of them, 21 students were from degree colleges and 36 were from pre-university colleges.
The winners would be given prizes in the Kanaka Smruthi programme to be held in March.

Teachers' category: Dinesh Pai G. (first), Sacred Heart College, Madantyar; Suma D. Rao (second), NSAM Pre-University College, Nitte; and Annapoorna Kamath (third), Narayana Sanil Pre-University College, Haleyangady.
