Civic bodies told to complete works withing three months

March 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - MANGALURU:

District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai on Tuesday gave a three-month deadline to the seven urban local bodies (ULBs) in the district to complete the works being executed under the Chief Minister’s small and medium towns development project Phase 2. He said a delay of nearly two years was not acceptable.

The Minister directed the ULBs to strictly adhere to quality in the works, without giving room for any scams.

Presiding over a review meeting of the project here, Mr. Rai asked the local bodies, except that Mangaluru City Corporation that is out of the scheme’s ambit, to hold quarterly meeting with the contractor to ensure quality in works. He said there were many complaints about sub-standard works in construction of pavements with interlock blocks.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim directed the ULBs to submit details of development projects being executed by contractors within one month to the district administration.

The seven ULBs — Bantwal Town Municipal Council (TMC), Moodabidri TMC, Puttur Municipality (then TMC), Ullala TMC, Belthangady Town Panchayat (TP), Mulky TP and Sullia TP — were sanctioned projects worth Rs. 35 crore (Rs. 5 crore for each ULB). Tenders were invited for all the works except drainage works in Mulky and Sullia with the work estimate worth Rs. 33 crore in 2012.

Tenders were awarded in May 2013 to KBR Infratech Ltd., to execute these works at Rs. 34,74,44,450. Till date, works worth Rs. 25 crore have been completed, according to district urban planning cell. Eight works in Bantwal, Belthangady and Moodbidri and seven in Mulky have been completed, while only work is complete in Puttur and Sullia.
