K. Raghupati Bhat, former MLA, on Wednesday urged the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes to sanction a flyover each at Brahmavar and at Karavali Junction in Udupi along the National Highway 66.
Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Bhat said that a flyover was essential for Brahmavar as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was at present constructing a ramp, with an underpass for the movement of cattle.
This ramp would divide the entire Brahmavar town into two portions and make movement of people and vehicles from one side to the other difficult.
The problem could be solved if the NHAI constructed a flyover, he said. The people in Brahmavar were opposed to the ramp and preferred a flyover or a broad road. Even the Save National Highway 66 Committee had opposed the ramp.
He had already written a letter to Mr. Fernandes on this issue. He had also met the officials of the NHAI and given them 10 days’ time to consult Mr. Fernandes and take a decision.
If Mr. Fernandes and NHAI did not decide in favour of a flyover or a broader road in 10 days, the Bharatiya Janata Party would launch an agitation and block NH 66, he warned.
Since the highway cannot be blocked for a long time, the BJP would resort to a continuous agitation.
