The all India bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) was ‘total’ on Wednesday, Leo Rodrigues, Convenor, told The Hindu .
He said nearly 400 people attended the demonstration held in front of the State Bank of India on Wednesday.
D.N.Prakash, President, All India Bank Officers (AIBOC), said that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) must be given more powers to audit its findings. Schemes such as corporate debt restructuring and one time settlement of debts are ways to let borrowers get away. “The scheme permits it and it is public money,” he said.
Walter Lasrado, president, Corporation Bank Employees Association (CBEA), said the bank unions were on a two-day strike against the proposed change in voting rights in private and public banks that would chang the shareholding patterns. They are also against the amendment being brought about to merge smaller banks with bigger banks, which will affect the working opportunities for employees. Also, they are not in favour of the outsourcing that is taking place in the public sector banks instead of recruiting and creating jobs for future generations. “We would like to protect public sector banks,” he said.
