The Police Department has recruited 92 police personnel for Dakshina Kannada. They will be sent for a one-year training this month, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, Labhu Ram, said here on Sunday.
He was replying to a question at the monthly meeting meant for redressing grievances of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people at his office.
Gopala Kadumatha, a participant at the meeting, said that many police stations in the district did not have enough staff.
Whenever Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people conducted public meetings or religious programmes, the police should provide security.
Mr. Ram said there was no need to deploy police personnel for all such meetings. If there was any problem or threat, the department would provide security.
He said that under Rule 11 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995, every victim of atrocity or his/her dependent and witnesses were entitled for drawing travelling and maintenance allowance for attending trial in a court or investigation in a police station.
Every woman witness, the victim of atrocity or her dependent being a woman or a minor, a person aged above 60 and a person having 40 per cent or more disability was entitled to an attendant of her/ his choice.
Mr. Ram said the amount would be disbursed by respective tahsildars on the basis of certified letter issued by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Puttur sub division, who was the investigating officer for the atrocity cases.
He asked Dalit leaders to create awareness among their community people to avail the allowance as nobody was availing the benefit.
Mr. Ram said that 40 atrocity cases were registered in the district in 11 months of 2011. Later, Superintendent of Police said that 92 candidates had been issued with appointment orders.
He said that a proposal had been sent to the Government to upgrade police outposts at Nelyadi, Dharmasthala, and Farangipet as police stations. The Government had been requested to open a police outpost at Mani. It had been requested to upgrade the Bantwal Rural police station to be headed by a Police Inspector.
Mr. Ram said the Government had been requested to recruit more personnel for District Armed Reserve (DAR) and wireless section.
