Additional Deputy Commissioner G. Anuradha said on Thursday that effective steps needed to be taken to check the spread of malaria in Udupi district.

She was chairing a district-level Malaria Coordination Committee meeting at the District Offices Complex, here. District Health and Family Welfare Officer Rohini told the meeting that 48 cases of malaria were recorded in the district in June, while 84 cases of dengue were recorded in the district during the same period.

Precautionary measures had been taken in areas where the incidence of malaria and dengue were high. Mosquito nets too had been distributed.

Information, education and communication (IEC) programme was being implemented in schools and in local bodies. The private hospitals had been told to follow the government guidelines while treating patients with malaria, she said.

Ms. Anuradha directed the Health Department to conduct awareness programmes in areas where migrant labourers lived in the district.

Officers of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Women and Child Welfare were present.
