As part of Vanamahotsava-2011 held in the New Mangalore Port, 400 saplings were planted on Wednesday, said a press release. The saplings were planted as part of an initiative called “A Clean and Green Port.” The port plans to plant 10,000 saplings in 2010-11, along with other measures to minimise environmental pollution.
P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT); T.S.N. Murthy, Deputy Chairman, NMPT; C.D. Kumar, Senior Environmental Officer of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB); Palaiah, Deputy Conservator of Forest; students and teachers of Meenakaliya High School; residents of Meenakaliya village; Gangadhar Pangal, President, Mogavera Mahasabha, Meenakaliya; and port employees had participated.
Mr. Tamilvanan said that students should plant saplings near their homes and schools and take care of them. They should educate their friends and neighbours to take care of the surroundings. Ganapathy Aithal of Meenakaliya village requested the villagers to take care of the plants, the release said.
