As many as 10 Indira Canteens, including five in Mangaluru, will come up in Dakshina Kannada after two months, said Food and Civil Supplies Minister U.T. Khader here on Monday.
Talking to presspersons, Mr. Khader said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to have one Indira Canteen in his Mangaluru Assembly constituency (erstwhile Ullal) as it has a population of 50,000.
The other canteens are proposed in Puttur, Belthangady, Bantwal and Sullia.
Mr. Khader said with successful operation of Indira Canteens in Bengaluru the State Cabinet approved setting up these canteens in every taluk and city municipality.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wants these canteens to start operation by January. The Department of Municipal Administration has been made as a nodal agency for setting up these canteens.
The Minister said directions have been issued to local administrations for searching land for these canteens.
Asked about objections to acquisition of land for canteens in Bengaluru, Mr. Khader claimed that it was raised by councillors who did not want the canteens to come up in their areas. No residents in Benglauru have opposed setting up these canteens, he said.
