A youth, who was beaten up brutally by a group of five persons in a banana plantation in Madurai on Saturday for having a love affair with a girl, died on Sunday.
Police sources said S.Ravikumar (22) of Pavalamalaipatti and a 19-year-old girl from Rengapalayam, his distant relative, were working in a fireworks unit near Pudupatti. They were in love and it came to the knowledge of her family.
The girl’s elder brother S.Muniselvam (23), a police constable, with the help of S.Azhagusamy, also a constable, and three others, S.Ravikannan (28), S.Marudhupandi (22) and M.Perumal (34), called Ravikumar to the banana plantation near Sengulam tank for a “peaceful settlement.” However, the group of five got angry over Ravikumar’s insistence on continuing the relationship, and assaulted him brutally. He fell unconscious.
Muniselvam and Perumal tried to admit him to a private hospital here stating that he was injured in a road accident. Sensing foul play, the hospital administration asked them to take him to a private hospital in Madurai.
The Madurai hospital, in turn, asked them to rush him to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). Finally, he was admitted to the GRH, where he succumbed on Sunday.
