Contract sanitary workers of the Dindigul Corporation and members of Adhi Thamizhar Peravai on Monday laid a siege to the Dindigul Corporation office demanding protection to their life, wage revision and other benefits on a par with regular workers.

Addressing a gathering, Adhi Thamizhar Peravai leader Athiyaman said that there was no protection to sanitary workers at work site. Murder of three sanitary workers created panic among sanitary workers in the district.

The police did not register the triple murder case under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. But the police assured to alter the case by including the section. The alteration was a must to enable their family members to get financial assistance from the government, he added.

The workers demanded that all the benefits and facilities enjoyed by the regular sanitary workers should be extended to contact workers also. Wage revision and other aid and equipment like gloves and masks should be provided to them, he said.

Later, Mr. Athiyaman and a other few members met the Corporation Commissioner V. Manoharan and submitted a copy of the demands. In turn, he assured to forward the petition to the government for quick action.

Meanwhile, the contract sanitary workers started an indefinite strike from Monday pressing for various demands and to draw the attention of the government, he added.
