Women from Madurai receive aid

A total of 2, 502 married women received financial assistance and four grams of gold each here on Saturday from B. Valarmathi, Minister for Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Scheme.

As many as 882 women who had completed their graduation received Rs 50,000 and four grams of gold each while 1,069 women who had completed class 12 received Rs 25, 000 and four grams of gold each under the ‘Thalikku Thangam’ scheme.

Speaking about the scheme, Ms Valarmathi said that the objective was to ensure that women gave importance to their education and completed their studies. “There are many women from lower income groups who need financial assistance and in this district alone, we have disbursed assistance to 3,230 women today.”

S. Lalitha, a graduate who had applied for the assistance over a year back, hoped to start a self-help group for women in her area with the amount. Many beneficiaries admitted that the assistance would help them cover debts and outstanding loans.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa, Corporation Commissioner Kiran Gurrala, Minister for Cooperation Sellur K. Raju and other corporation and district officials were present.
