A 34-year-old woman has sought the assistance of the Collector to unravel the mystery behind her husband’s death in Kuala Lumpur early this week and make arrangments to bring the body back home.
D. Latha, hailing from Melavalasai near Kanjirankudi, met Collector K.Nanthakumar here on Thursday and presented a petition stating that her husband P. Dharmaraj, who had gone to Malaysia for work, had died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday while preparing to return to India.
The woman arrived at the Collectorate with her two daughters. She appealed to the Collector to take the issue up with the External Affairs Ministry through the State government and to institute a probe into the death of her husband.
She told reporters that her husband, who had gone to Malaysia in August 2008, had told her that he would bring his savings of INR 6 lakh and 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery while returning home within a fortnight. However, when he called her on Sunday at around 10 a.m., he sounded panicky and told her that he had problems with one Veerasingam and his two sons, Surudar and Padmanathan, all Malaysian nationals, with whom he was working in a hotel.
He said he was assaulted by them. He also told her that he feared for his life and was planning to meet another friend Sakthi.
When she tried to contact him after a couple of hours, the phone was switched off. Padmanathan and a co-worker Sasi called her on Monday to say that her husband had committed suicide by jumping off a building. The police had recovered the body and it was being kept in a hospital, they told her.
She suspected that her husband would have been done to death by Veerasingam and his two sons with whom he had entrusted his savings.
