Woman robber swallows chain

In a bizarre incident, R.Malliga (40) robbed one of her relatives of a gold chain at Tirupparankundram here in the small hours of Tuesday, but when neighbours caught her she swallowed it.

She was taken to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where an X-ray report confirmed that the three-sovereign gold chain was in her stomach. “Doctors are trying to flush out the chain,” Sub-Inspector of Police, Tirupparankundram, S.Kamali said.

The police said Malliga was instigated by her husband V.Ravi (51), from Tiruchengode in Namakkal district, to rob his aunt Chellammal, aged around 70 years, of her chain. The couple, who were staying in an adjacent house at Veyilugandamman Temple Street, gained entry into the house of Ms.Chellammal at around 2 a.m.

While Ravi held the hands of Ms.Chellammal, who has been bed-ridden for quite sometime, Malliga removed her chain.

When they came out of the house, Ms.Chellammal raised an alarm that woke up the neighbours. When the couple were rounded up by the neighbours, Malliga tried to hide the chain in her mouth. But as the people, most of them their relatives, frisked them, Malliga swallowed the chain in an attempt to come out clean.

However, when the couple were handed over to the police, Malliga spilled the beans. The couple, charged with robbery, were remanded in judicial custody.
