A 34-year-old woman delivered quadruplets at Government Rajaji Hospital here through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) here late on Sunday night.
A. Shajeetha had two baby boys and two girls through a caesarean delivery at 10.50 p.m. on Sunday, and while two babies weighed 1.7 kg each, one baby weighed 1.9 kg and the fourth 1.5 kg. Her husband N. Ahmed, a teacher at a government school in the city, said the babies and the mother were in good health.
The couple already have two children, a 11-year-old boy and a four-and-a-half-year-old girl.
“My wife underwent a family planning operation after the first two children were born in a private hospital in the city. While the government norms specify that only two centimetres of the fallopian tube should be taken, they had removed the whole organ. This came to light when my wife went for a check-up to have the procedure reversed as we wanted to have more children,” he said, adding he was going to file a case against the hospital.
Mr. Ahmed said since they had found out about his wife’s inability to have anymore children due to the botched up procedure, they decided to opt for the IVF method and underwent the procedure at a private clinic.
“While there is usually only a 20 per cent chance of getting a child through IVF procedure, we were lucky to get four children,” he said. Both the mother and children are in good health and will continue to be at the GRH for the next few days, Mr. Ahmed added.
